To prevent damage to the HID setup, the HID ballast contains a computer chip that can detect issues such as electrical surges, unexpected jumps in voltage, and power deficits. High temperatures can also trigger the chip to react. What the chip does is shut down, entering a sort of safety mode. This usually resets within 3 minutes. If this happens to you, shut down your car's headlights, wait about 5 minutes, and then try starting it again.
